I like to think that one of my greatest qualities in life is knowing my strengths and weaknesses. Grammar? Big strength. Simple math? Weakness. But of all my weaknesses, my cooking skills may be the most dire. I’m a firm believer that when it comes to cooking, some people just have the touch, and I, for one, do not. I follow recipes to a T and try my hardest, and it always just turns out subpar. However, I recently vowed to master some simple, quick, and healthy recipes that I actually like and could make on repeat. To no one’s surprise, I ended up turning to Trader Joe’s to help me figure it out.

After scouring both the Internet and the aisles of Trader Joe’s, I’ve developed an arsenal of three-ingredient meals that I rely on all week long—and that don’t require much actual cooking. Delete your Grubhub app, head to your nearest store, and try these easy Trader Joe’s recipes this week:

1. Chicken Caesar Wraps

Ingredients:

 1. Caesar Salad Kit
 2. Grilled Seasoned White Meat Chicken Strips
 3. Cauliflower Thins

These chicken Caesar wraps are one of my favorite quick, yummy lunches to make. I cut up some of the pre-cooked grilled chicken (this is peak laziness, and I can only pray my mother doesn’t read this), then add the lettuce, dressing, and parmesan from the salad kit to a few of Trader Joe’s cauliflower thins. It takes under five minutes and is so tasty, relatively healthy, and very filling. Pictured: three amazing wraps and a dog who wants them more than I do.

If I want one big wrap instead of the little ones the cauliflower thins provide, I love these tortillas and always have them in my cabinet.

2. Kung Pao Tempura Cauliflower Stir Fry Bowl

Ingredients:

 1. Kung Pao Tempura Cauliflower
 2. Organic Riced Cauliflower
 3. Gochujang Vegetable Stir Fry

I’ll be honest: As a non-vegetarian, I’m not THAT into the cauliflower-disguised-as-meat trend, but this stuff is GOOD. I cook this tempura cauliflower in the oven, and it gets so crispy and tastes even better than any frozen chicken you could make. I love to mix this up into a little healthier Asian alternative when I’m in a pinch. It’s one of those easy Trader Joe’s recipes that makes me feel like I’m a real chef and actually know what I’m doing.

As you’re baking the cauliflower, throw the stir fry and cauliflower rice into a pan and heat it up. To finish, I just use the sauce that comes with the tempura cauliflower (and sometimes a little bit of coconut aminos). The result is always *chef’s kiss.*

3. Pesto Gnocchi

Ingredients:

 1. Cauliflower Gnocchi
 2. Vegan Kale, Cashew, & Basil Pesto
 3. Grilled Seasoned White Meat Chicken Strips

I can hardly write a Trader Joe’s article without mentioning the miracle that is their cauliflower gnocchi. As an Italian girl, I will say without a shadow of a doubt that calling this stuff gnocchi is a stretch, but it’s a staple in my kitchen as an entity of its own (I also much prefer it to their kale gnocchi, which is simply meh to me).

I used to struggle with these because I couldn’t figure out how to cook them or what to put on them, but I’ve discovered the best way is to sear them in a pan so they get nice and crispy, and then top them with some pesto. I love throwing some pre-cooked chicken breast into the pan at the end to add some protein and make it feel more like a full-blown pasta dish. For this recipe, I use the same grilled chicken breast strips pictured in meal #1. It feels like an indulgent, fancy meal but is basically all veggies disguised as something far tastier. This might take the cake for my favorite Trader Joe’s recipe of the bunch—I just don’t seem to ever get sick of it.

4. Mexican Chicken Bowl

Ingredients:

 1. Grilled Chili Lime Chicken Strips
 2. Organic Black Beans
 3. Organic Riced Cauliflower
 4. Optional: your toppings of choice

This is one of my favorite meals to make throughout the week, and that’s because you can swap out the ingredients for ones that make it feel like a completely new meal every time you make it. I cook some rice and throw some black beans in for protein, then add TJ’s pre-made chili lime chicken, which is hands-down one of my favorite things to eat at home. I’m totally full when I make this recipe with just these three ingredients, but if I have any veggies or avocado or cheese in my apartment, I’ll throw those in too for an easy, quick, healthy burrito bowl.

Pro tip: This is hands-down my favorite Trader Joe’s dressing and sometimes I’ll mix a little into my chicken bowl for extra kick and flavor.

5. Cauliflower Pizza

Ingredients:

 1. Cauliflower Pizza Crust
 2. Pizza Sauce
 3. Shredded Pizza Seasoned Toscano Cheese
 4. Optional: your toppings of choice

There’s nothing that screams Friday night to me like a good ole’ pizza. I used to rely on an endless stream of regular frozen pizzas, but I recently upgraded to using my own Trader Joe’s recipe. Listen, this swap doesn’t make it much healthier, but I love making my own little pizza with whatever toppings I have in my fridge. This pizza cheese has been one of my favorite recent TJ’s discoveries and makes it taste more like a real take-out pizza, which is obviously the goal.

I always keep these ingredients in my fridge for nights when I just need something yummy for dinner. I’m partial to a thin, super crispy pizza, and this crust gets perfectly crispy (just make sure to follow the cooking instructions on the package—don’t be impatient and try to cut corners like I have). I tossed some arugula on this (weird but highly recommend) in an effort to use up a bag that I had in the fridge and voilà! A perfect little homemade pizza.

6. Mandarin Chicken

3-ingredient trader joe's recipes
Source: Madeline Galassi

Ingredients:

 1. Mandarin Orange Chicken
 2. Organic Riced Cauliflower or Vegetable Fried Rice
 3. Organic Broccoli Florets

This is another faux-Asian recipe that feels satisfying but also way healthier than actually ordering Chinese food. Bake your chicken and fry up some rice and broccoli, and you have a 15-minute meal that you can mistake for takeout.

In its day, TikTok has gifted us with plenty of “-cores.” From “old money aesthetic” to “coastal grandma” to “office siren,” TikTok is the app of aesthetics. Now, the platform’s given us a viral trend that’s different from the rest: underconsumption core. The antithesis of overconsumption, this trend is all about living minimally and simplistically in the name of sustainability and saving. It’s about buying only what you need, repurposing items, and using them until they break. The underconsumption core tag on TikTok features over 44.9M posts in which creators share their minimal lifestyles, bare-bones routines, and simple pleasures.

After years of watching countless influencers and TikTok users flaunt their excessive lifestyles, I have to admit that underconsumption core is a breath of fresh air. However, the problem I have with the trend is that it “core-ifies” something that’s actually not an aesthetic. In reality, underconsumption core is a direct response to a problem TikTok itself created.

Why we need underconsumption core

While we’ve been staring down economic uncertainty since the pandemic, some TikTok creator has been buzzing in our ears, telling us what to buy as they showed off an armful of products in their pristine home. Regardless of the creator or what product they were promoting, the message was always the same: Buy this, and you can live like me, too. It was a promise that even the most savvy shoppers have been unable to resist—I’m not immune, either. For the past several years, we’ve bitten the bullet, tried to justify the purchase using girl math, and prayed that the product lived up to the hype. It’s been a brutal cycle to be a part of, which is part of why “underconsumption core” is necessary on TikTok.

Underconsumption core is still ignorant of the fact that many of us just simply don’t live like TikTok influencers in real life anyway.

The rise of TikTok shop hasn’t helped, either. The platform rolled out its “social commerce” platform in September—the app earns commission on each sale and pushes users to buy from the shop with strategic advertising and repetitive haul videos. You’ve probably seen the ads. One second, you’re watching a video of a cute dog, someone’s vacation, or their favorite dinner to cook from home, and the next, you’re getting an ad for yet another Free People sweatshirt dupe. While TikTok shop might be convenient and cheap, it also fuels the mindless overconsumption that makes the app so exhausting.

For years, TikTokers (and TikTok) have capitalized on the fact that young adults use influencer recommendations to make buying decisions, and now that we’ve all seen the detrimental consequences this has on our wallets, we’ve decided to fight back with underconsumption core. There’s something kind of beautiful about this. Seeing people share the simple things they love about their lives under the underconsumption core tag is like a breath of fresh air in the middle of a clogged TikTok feed. However, underconsumption core is still ignorant of the fact that many of us just simply don’t live like TikTok influencers in real life anyway.

The problem with underconsumption core

While “underconsumption core” is an aesthetic, the act of not overconsuming is not. Being able to decide what and what not to buy is a privilege, and for most people, not buying things is a way to save more money and make ends meet—it’s the choice between having that handbag or a roof over your head with food in the fridge. This is especially true in our current economy, where a reported one in three Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. It’s great to encourage people to consume less, but framing underconsumption as an aesthetic is ignorant of the fact that for most people, minimalism and simple pleasures are just life.

@dainty.nugs

Some underconsumption tips ive been trying to follow this year, i am actually spending WAY less already than last year on material items and way more on experiences, traveling, hobbies and spending time with loved ones! #underconsumption #deinfluencing #underconsumptioncore

♬ original sound – speedz!

There’s something dystopian about a movement like underconsumption core existing on a platform that encourages people to consume more in itself. From putting time limits on videos to encourage you to keep scrolling to the hard push toward “social commerce” on TikTok shop, TikTok isn’t about underconsumption, and it never will be. And at the end of the day, when you’re rapidly scrolling from underconsumption core videos to giant influencer hauls to videos of lavish vacations to a fridge restock, the overall impact of underconsumption core on your actual consumption habits isn’t going to be huge.

So, yes—we do need underconsumption core, and anything that raises awareness for a simpler, more sustainable way of living is great. But turning something that, for many people, is just a way of life into a “core” is kind of silly and a bit delulu given the platform.

How to spend less without resorting to underconsumption core

In case you are #influenced by underconsumption core, you may wonder how you can consume less without, you know, core-ifying your own daily existence. Here are some tips for sustainably reducing your consumption in the long term.

Create a wishlist for non-essential purchases

This hack is especially helpful for those who frequently make splurges or impulse purchases. Rather than forgoing online shopping completely, start making wish lists or adding items to the “save for later” tabs on your favorite sites. Then, set a financial goal for yourself to reach before you can buy a certain item or items. Not only will this restrain you from spending impulsively, but it’ll also encourage smart spending.

Use influencer recommendations carefully

It’s easy to blindly trust your favorite influencer’s product recommendations, especially if they’ve steered you right in the past, but buying everything they love isn’t going to give you a return on your investment.

To prevent yourself from blindly trusting one single influencer, seek out influencer recommendations and reviews only when you’re in the market for a new product. For example, if you need a new foundation, look up your favorite beauty influencers and find which products each recommends, then conduct your own research (maybe even read a few online reviews, wink wink) before buying. This will make it easier to prevent overconsumption while simultaneously spending less.

Remember that you’re allowed the occasional splurge

Overconsumption and underconsumption core are two extreme ends of the spectrum, so instead of falling into one or the other, try to land somewhere in the middle. Balance is an essential element of a well-rounded life, after all, and you deserve the occasional splurge, especially if you’ve been diligently paying off debt and building your savings.

When it comes to splurge purchases, try setting financial goals for yourself that dictate what you can buy. For example, if you save up $5,000, you might splurge on a new coat, while a $15,000 milestone might earn you a designer bag. Whatever it is, giving yourself goals to work toward will keep you motivated and, in turn, make it easier to consume less and prevent unnecessary product waste.

Log off

Maybe the real underconsumption core was the social media boundaries we learned along the way! If you feel like you’re caught in a cycle of scrolling between underconsumption core videos and TikTok shop hauls, that might be a sign that you need to hop off the app for a couple of days. Remember: Your real life isn’t a “core.” It’s even better.

If there’s one thing I really can’t stand, it’s being mansplained to. And although I love the Olympics just as much as any other rabid Simone Biles fan with little to no athletic talent, avoiding mansplaining gets particularly tough during the Olympic games. Thankfully, Peacock has provided us with a mansplaining fix: Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper is hosting weekly watch parties for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Whether you consider yourself a member of the Daddy gang or not, there’s really something to be said for watching a girliepop internet star (who was also a college athlete, and don’t you forget it!) knowledgeably yap during some of the most prominent team events of the Olympic games. Here’s why I’ll be tuning into every episode of Watch With Alex Cooper, plus where you can stream it throughout the rest of the games.

She explained the game in pop culture terms

On July 28, Watch With Alex Cooper covered the U.S. women’s soccer team’s match with Germany (which the U.S. won 4-1, btw). Do I know anything about soccer aside from the fact that I would rather watch women playing than men? I do not, but thankfully, Alex came to her own watch party prepared. One major highlight included her breaking down the history of the U.S. women’s soccer team in Taylor Swift eras, which is honestly how I now believe all history lessons ought to be taught. She also explained the stages of the Olympic soccer tournament in Love Island terms: in her words, “If you lose in the knockout round, Ariana Madix is showing up and telling you you’ve been voted off the island.”

Anecdotes aside, it was refreshing to watch a sporting event with internet brainrot girl-speak over it instead of the typical pundit banter. Unlike mansplaining, I will gladly listen to Alex Cooper say she’s “manifesting” a goal for the USWNT any day. And when she’s covering the women’s all-around gymnastics final on Thursday, you know I would rather hear her commentating on Suni Lee and Simone Biles than any random dude.

She brought on some iconic guests

When I tell you I’ve never known the identity of a single talking head on any sports coverage before, I am so serious. But Watch With Alex Cooper was different, because Alex brought on everyone from Andy Cohen to Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambach to chat through the details of the Olympic games, women’s soccer, and even Olympic fashion. Technically, sports are reality television, so it only makes sense that the king of Bravo would be on this watch party, right?! In all seriousness, it meant a lot to see names and faces that even the athletically illiterate gals (present!) can recognize.

Though we don’t know the exact schedule of Watch With Alex Cooper until further elimination rounds are completed, we do know that she’ll be covering women’s gymnastics and basketball at the very least. Personally, I’m hoping to see her chat with Aly Raisman over the women’s gymnastics all-around, and perhaps one of our favorite NCAA women’s basketball stars from this year during the basketball final. And if the TikTok girlies don’t see her yap with breakout rugby star Ilona Maher at some point, I know they’ll be bummed.

Anecdotes aside, it was refreshing to watch a sporting event with internet brainrot girl-speak over it instead of the typical pundit banter. Unlike mansplaining, I will gladly listen to Alex Cooper say she’s “manifesting” a goal for the USWNT any day.

She pulled out her college athlete know-how

Just in case you thought for a second that the Unwell Network founder isn’t qualified to be commentating on the Olympic games, Alex brought out her knowledge of the history of the USWNT and soccer itself this week. This was particularly clear as she thoughtfully explained (while munching on french fries) why USWNT star striker Alex Morgan was left off the 2024 Olympic roster to those of us who were shocked by the news in spite of, again, knowing nothing about soccer. “Emma Hayes knows it’s time for a new generation,” she said. Once I figured out that Emma Hayes is the USWNT manager, I realized just how smart (and beyond qualified) “father” really is.

Of course, Alex played soccer, so she’s not going to know everything about every sport—but that’s also part of the fun. Knowing her for the girlboss she is, I’m sure she’ll brush up on each sport before her live streams.

When and Where to Stream Watch With Alex Cooper

Since it’s the year to start hardcore tuning into women’s sports, you might as well tune into a woman covering them, too! The next Watch With Alex Cooper is coming this Thursday on Peacock at 12:15pm ET during the women’s gymnastics all-around event. Further livestream details will come as the elimination rounds for each event progress, so keep your eye on any women’s sporting event where the U.S. team is doing well! Personally, I can’t wait to be womansplained to again.

The post Forget Banza—These are The Healthiest Pasta Alternatives appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>
When Banza first hit the shelves back in 2014, I was intrigued by their products, considering their pastas were made from chickpeas rather than the traditional wheat. Chickpeas are plant-based powerhouses packed with protein and fiber. While all pasta can be a healthy base for a meal, one serving of cooked Banza pasta has up to 20 grams of protein and 8 grams of fiber, as well as iron and potassium (two minerals necessary for optimal circulation). And in general, consuming legumes regularly has been shown to have positive health effects, such as improving cholesterol and promoting longevity.

As a dietician, Banza has been my go-to on days when I want a quick, filling, and nutritious meal. So when I found out the safety of Banza pasta had been called into question because of purported high levels of the herbicide glyphosate, I had to look into it further. Moms Across America, a nonprofit organization that’s been working to ban glyphosate from being sprayed on food crops, released a report saying that Banza Chickpea Pasta had the highest amount of glyphosate among multiple gluten-free products they tested. But what does this all mean, and do we really need to ditch Banza for good? Also, what pasta alternatives or pasta products are actually the healthiest? Let’s get into it.

Morgan Tarmann, MS, RD, LDN

Explaining The Banza Controversy

What is Glyphosate?

Glyphosate is an herbicide (a chemical designed to kill unwanted plants like weeds) that has been used in the U.S. since 1974. You’ve most likely heard of it for its uses in agriculture, but you may also see it listed in at-home weed killers. Typically, glyphosate is used on a variety of crops, though the most common are for corn, cotton, and soybeans. In organic farming, the herbicide is banned, though there may still be traces of glyphosate found in organic products.

Is Glyphosate Bad for Your Health?

Given that glyphosate is a chemical substance, it can have short-term negative effects if you’re directly exposed to it (i.e., using it to spray weeds at home). Inhaling glyphosate or skin exposure can cause irritation, burns, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. But when it comes to ingesting glyphosate residue in food, it’s a bit more complicated.

Currently, research is divided on the long-term health risks associated with consuming food treated with glyphosate. One of the biggest concerns related to the herbicide is its potential link to cancer. Some studies propose that there is a link, while others state the opposite. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not recognize glyphosate as a carcinogen, and it states that glyphosate does not pose a risk to human health. According to the EPA, food that contains residues of glyphosate is safe for consumers as long as they are below the tolerable threshold. However, the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified glyphosate as a probable carcinogen.

Other research has studied the effects of glyphosate on liver and gut health. In a 2023 study from UC Berkeley, researchers found that early childhood exposure to glyphosate was linked to higher liver inflammation as they entered adulthood. In a 2020 literature review of multiple studies, it was concluded that glyphosate could cause gut dysbiosis, which is an imbalance of the bacteria that live in your gut microbiome. When this occurs, it can make you more vulnerable to infections and disease. Despite these studies, there is still limited research on how glyphosate affects humans overall, so more comprehensive data is needed to better understand its effects long-term.

So, Are We Still Eating Banza?

According to the Moms Across America report, the level of glyphosate found in Banza Chickpea Pasta was 2,876.24 parts per billion (ppb), which is lower than the EPA’s safety threshold of 5,000 ppb. The group’s findings were not published in a peer-reviewed journal, and experts emphasized that it’s impossible to draw conclusions about lab results without knowing what kind(s) of testing was performed. Banza’s company website states that their brand conducted its own independent test through a third party, which showed a result of 0.1 parts per million (a number below the EPA’s safety threshold). This level of glyphosate complies with both the U.S. and EU standards and is below the amount that was claimed by Moms Across America. The company also mentioned that when cooking pasta in water, it helps to remove the trace amounts of glyphosate, which are discarded with the water.

For the TL;DR version, Banza pasta has, in fact, been shown to contain glyphosate, but at levels lower than the safe threshold (meaning it is safe for human consumption). While that might mean you don’t necessarily have to stop stocking your pantry with their products, there is conflicting information regarding the potential negative health effects of glyphosate. As a consumer, it is important to be aware of these potential risks so you can make informed choices regarding your overall health. A safe bet is to go with certified organic options whenever possible to ensure you’re limiting toxin exposure as much as you can. If you’re a Banza Pasta girly but want to limit your exposure to glyphosate, keep reading for alternative pastas that range from plant-based to gluten-free to higher-protein options.

Healthiest Pasta Alternatives

1. Tolerant Organic Red Lentil Penne

Healthy Pasta Alternatives

If you’re looking for a pasta that is still higher in protein and fiber, red lentil pasta is an alternative option that is comparable to Banza. Tolerant Penne offers 21 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber in one serving. Just like chickpeas, lentils are inherently gluten-free; for those unable to consume wheat or gluten due to an allergy or sensitivity, this brand’s products are also made in a gluten-free facility. What makes it different from Banza is that it’s certified organic and contains only one ingredient (Banza contains tapioca and xanthan gum—though not inherently unhealthy, the fewer additives the better).

2. Jovial 100% Organic Einkorn Whole Wheat Spaghetti

Healthy Pasta Alternatives

If you do not have a sensitivity or allergy to gluten, gluten is OK! In fact, wheat contains a lot of fiber and nutrients. If you’re looking for wheat pasta, try an organic whole wheat product, which contains more nutrients than refined white pasta. (During the refining process, grains are stripped of their outer layers, which contain more protein and important nutrients such as B vitamins, iron, and zinc.) Jovial’s Whole Wheat Spaghetti is made from einkorn, an ancient grain that has a slightly nutty flavor and is less starchy than other wheat products, meaning it may be more easily digested.

3. Spaghetti Squash

Healthy Pasta Alternatives

Though not technically considered pasta, spaghetti squash is a delicious plant-based alternative for your favorite pasta dishes. While it may look unsuspecting on the outside, once cooked (and fluffed with a fork), the squash resembles thin spaghetti noodles. Spaghetti squash can be prepared ahead of time by roasting it in the oven or cooking it in the microwave, just be sure to rinse the outside prior to cooking to remove any remaining debris. Once prepared, you can mix it with your favorite pasta sauce. For added protein, consider using it to make a pasta bake.

4. Jovial 100% Organic Gluten-Free Brown Rice Penne

Healthy Pasta Alternatives

For a gluten-free option that is glyphosate residue-free, try Jovial’s Brown Rice Penne. This option is lower in protein than other legume-based options, but brown rice is a whole grain, so it is full of fiber and antioxidants that can prevent premature aging and disease (and it may taste the most similar to wheat pasta if you need to avoid gluten but don’t like the taste of legume-based pasta). Brown rice is another heavily sprayed crop, so the organic certification ensures limited exposure as much as possible. This brand offers a variety of pasta shapes, giving you different options to create many pasta dishes.

5. Veggiecraft Penne

Healthy Pasta Alternatives

This pasta, similar to Banza, is made from plants, but in this case, the sources are peas, lentils, and zucchini. Given those are the only three ingredients, it’s also another gluten-free option. This brand is not certified organic, which does not mean it’s inherently unhealthy, it just means there is less regulation on farming practices. But I love that it adds vegetables like cauliflower and zucchini in addition to legumes to pack in more nutrients. A single serving contains 13 grams of protein, and who doesn’t want to fit in an extra dose of veggies when they can?

It doesn’t take an expert to notice that just about every colorful sneaker on the market is out of stock—but when you hover over the neutral colorway? You’ll find just the opposite. It wasn’t long ago that the white sneaker was the shoe of choice for everything from celebrity street style to fashion influencers’ outfit checks. So, what happened?

It makes sense that white sneakers are a mainstay in our closets—after all, what could be more versatile? But when you rely on your accessories to do styling heavy-lifting, white sneakers can’t pack nearly the same punch that colorful ones can. Thanks to society’s recent obsession with Adidas Sambas and Gazelles—which are available in all colors of the rainbow—colorful sneakers are finally being appreciated for what they can do to an outfit (read: totally transform it). Now, just about every footwear brand, sneaker-focused or not, is offering a retro, saturated sneaker. Make way, girls, it’s giving personality!

Whether you’re looking for new ways to style your colorful sneakers or are simply colorful sneaker-curious, these looks might just convince you to put your white sneakers into retirement.

1. With All White

Wearing an all-white outfit is, in my opinion, the chicest way to sport a colorful sneaker. Sure, you could just as easily pair this look with a white sneaker, but where’s the fun in that? Try updating your favorite white summer dress with a bright shoe—bonus points for coordinating accessories.

2. With “Jeans and a Cute Top”

Jeans and a cute top? Say less. It’s an elite combo that’s as old as time—or the early 2000s, realistically—but now, TikTok is reserving the term for outfits that consist of baggy jeans and tight-fitting tops. Take the combo up a notch this season and add in a colorful sneaker. The result will be effortless and cool girl-coded.

3. With Head-to-Toe Color

Ready for a challenge? Might I suggest leaning into color even further and pairing your colorful sneakers with—dare I say—another color? Try out-of-the-box combinations like yellow and blue, red and orange, and green and pink.

4. With Similar Shades

If you happen to find yourself in a styling rut, experiment with a monochromatic look. The key to a successful monochromatic outfit is to work with slightly varying shades of a color instead of trying to match each piece perfectly. You want this to look like you quickly threw it together without trying too hard.

We all have that one celebrity or influencer we are absolutely obsessed with. You consume all the content these people put out, click on their LTK to buy pieces if they post an OOTD, and often think, “Would (insert celeb of your choice here) like this?” when shopping. For some, this may be Hailey Bieber or Alix Earle, but for me, it’s the queen of rom-coms, Nancy Meyers. The director behind beloved movies like Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday, and The Parent Trap has cemented her icon status if you ask me. Of course, I love her romance plotlines and the imperfect-yet-lovable characters in her films, but my favorite aspect is actually the set designs—specifically, the lived-in, cozy, perfectly styled living rooms.

If you’re anything like me, you constantly search for inspiration to get the Nancy Meyers look, so I rounded up 10 living rooms that look like the filmmaker herself decorated them. Here’s the Nancy Meyers living room look you should channel based on your favorite set from her movies.

1. If you love the beach house from Something’s Gotta Give

nancy meyers
Source: Bria Hammel Interiors

I’d be happy to call any beach house in the Hamptons home, but if I’m being picky, I’d choose the stunning interiors in Something’s Gotta Give. Fortunately, I’m flexible, so I’ll settle for recreating the look in my own space with inspiration from this living room’s classic stripes, natural woods, and light blues. Bring in some texture with a weathered wood coffee table, hang coastal-themed artwork, and accessorize with bronze taper candleholders to complete the look.

2. If you would get back with your ex, too, if it meant living in the house from It’s Complicated

nancy meyers
Source: Harlowe James

Sure, having an affair with your ex-husband of 10 years comes with a lot of drama, but if I were Alec Baldwin’s character, I would welcome the drama to move into Meryl Streep’s gorgeous Santa Barbara home in It’s Complicated. These characters are motivated by love instead of decor envy, and thankfully, you can achieve a similar style without all the emotional turmoil. This timeless living room totally nails the hominess we love from this classic Nancy Meyers interior. Get the vibes at home with vintage-inspired artwork, a collection of well-loved reads on a bookshelf, and plenty of texture through the addition of a woven jute rug and warm wood furniture.

3. If you love the pops of pink in the Home Again decor

nancy meyers
Source: @emilykennedyphoto

I don’t want to pick favorites, but the Home Again living room is definitely near the top of my list of all-time favorite rooms (we all have one of those, right?). The pops of pink prove that you don’t have to abandon color for a sophisticated home. If you want a Nancy Meyers-esque living room with a touch of pink, this one is the perfect inspo. However, you don’t need to stick to one color. This room seamlessly blends several different hues thanks to the mix-and-match approach to patterns. Steal the look with a statement ottoman, throw pillows in a variety of prints, and grandmillennial-inspired accessories.

4. If you would take all the in-law drama for the Father of the Bride house

nancy meyers
Source: @caitlinflemming

For even one cozy movie night in the fabulous living room in Father of the Bride, I’d take all the drama from the film and more. Similar to the one in the movie, this living room has that signature Nancy Meyers coziness but doesn’t go overboard on the grandmillenial aesthetic. It uses a majority neutral color palette with intentional pops of color for a simple but still exciting look. To channel this in your own home, stick to neutrals for your walls and most of your furniture, then bring in subtle color and pattern through accessories like throw blankets, artwork, and accent pillows.

5. If you think Hallie got the better deal in The Parent Trap

nancy meyers
Source: Love Grows Wild

A question that has plagued me since childhood is whether I would rather live Annie or Hallie’s life in The Parent Trap. Both twins have got it made, but as tempting as Annie’s posh London lifestyle is, I’m ultimately won over by the Napa Valley vineyard where Hallie lives. For me, it’s the horses and Chessy, the coolest nanny in movie history, that push it over the edge. This living room channels the lived-in, relaxed, but incredibly well-styled energy of the Parker family home. Classic materials like leather and linen are key to this look, as are a few strategically placed trinkets and lamps for a cozy ambience. The goal is to make it look collected and intentional but not over-decorated.

6. If your dream is to live in a Brooklyn brownstone like in The Intern

nancy meyers
Source: Aimee Mazzenga for The Everygirl

This living room immediately reminds me of Anne Hathaway’s Brooklyn home in The Intern. It borrows the mostly black-and-white color scheme from the movie while still nailing that signature Nancy Meyers charm. For a similar look, mix traditional and modern elements like a statement gold mirror, an antique-looking light fixture, and a contemporary metal coffee table. And, of course, you can’t have a Nancy Meyers-inspired room without plenty of artwork and coffee table books, which stick to the black-and-white color palette in this room.

7. If you prefer Cameron Diaz’s Los Angeles home in The Holiday

nancy meyers

If you’d pick Cameron Diaz’s impressive Los Angeles home over the English cottage in The Holiday any day, try this living room look in your home. It proves you can keep your room mostly neutral without sacrificing personality. To keep the room from feeling bland, incorporate natural materials to add texture and bring in candles, vases, and coffee table books to boost the coziness.

8. If you’re still not over Diane Keaton’s coastal grandma vibe

nancy meyers
Source: @briahammelinteriors

We can all thank Nancy Meyers for creating the original coastal grandma blueprint: Diane Keaton in Something’s Gotta Give. This living room perfectly channels her character’s elegant, coastal-chic vibe. While you may not be able to add a gorgeous tiled fireplace to your room, you can easily recreate the blue and white color scheme, striped ottomans, and woven trays to achieve a similar look.

9. If you want to live in the cottage from The Holiday

nancy meyers
Source: @ahousewren

You can practically feel this living room’s warmth and coziness through the screen. Its playful mix of patterns overflows with grandmillennial charm, and the decor is reminiscent of the English countryside cottage we know and love from The Holiday. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee Jude Law will come knock on your door, but it can’t hurt to try to recreate this cozy look. Start with a warm-toned rug, add some fun patterned throw pillows, and finish it off with coffee table books and small decor pieces to add a personal touch.

If you can’t pick a favorite Nancy Meyers movie but love the coziness present in all her set designs, this living room embodies that comfortability. It’s the kind of room that makes you want to curl up to read a book on the couch just looking at it. The post 8 Inexpensive Ways to Make Your Rental Feel Like Home appeared first on The Everygirl.

When I first moved into my apartment, I felt a mix of emotions between excitement, nervousness, and overwhelm. I was no longer living with my mom (even though I still see her quite a few times a month), I had just gained this wave of independence, and my partner and I were starting an exciting new chapter together. I spent weeks planning decor, buying essentials, and dreaming about how my new home would look. However, I quickly realized that I would have to dial down my dreams of being a novice interior designer to accommodate the restrictions of renting. Painting, wallpapering, and other major changes are big no-nos in rentals (and a lot of effort for a temporary space). But that didn’t stop me from creating a space I love.

From temporary updates like a new showerhead (life-changing BTW) to low-effort DIYs and decor that doubles as organization, there are plenty of ways to make a rental feel like home while following the rules. Here are eight ways to make your rental feel like a reflection of you.

1. Add your own personal touches

To make your rental truly feel like home, it’s always a good idea to include pieces of yourself when decorating. Whether that means displaying photos of friends and family, incorporating your favorite colors, or decorating with pieces you inherited from a loved one, these details are great reminders that your home is an extension of yourself and should reflect what you love. Artwork is another great way to personalize your rental. When I was a kid, the walls of my home were always covered in eclectic canvas paintings, and I’ve carried a few of those paintings with me over the years. Now, I display them in my current home for a sentimental feel. You could also choose artwork that serves as Easter eggs for your personal hobbies and interests, such as a Velaris-coded art print for all my ACOTAR fans or a custom dog portrait for the devoted dog moms.

2. Upgrade your lighting

Good lighting can transform the feeling of a rental from dull or overly bright to a soft, cozy ambiance. To update your rental’s lighting without switching out any of the existing fixtures, swap the standard-issue lightbulbs for a more tech-savvy option, such as smart bulbs that can dim or change colors. If changing the bulbs on your “big lights” isn’t enough, lamps are a great way to add soft lighting that doubles as decor. As opposed to overhead lighting that can create a sharp contrast in a room, lamps spread out the lighting and give your space a much warmer, more inviting feel.

3. Bring in life with plants

There’s something about plants that just boosts your mood. From colorful flowers to rich greenery, plants exude positive energy and are the perfect way to accessorize your rental. If you have a green thumb, select a houseplant that suits your space and lifestyle (some require more work than others!). If you’re like me and not gifted in the gardening department, displaying fresh flowers in a vase can easily brighten your home. You could also opt for some realistic-looking fake plants, which have the same visual benefits as real plants while being the ultimate low-maintenance option.

4. Add pops of color

Whether you prefer a subtle approach to color or you gravitate toward more colorful palettes, incorporating your favorite colors can help make your rental feel like home. If you love a neutral color scheme, play with different shades and textures to bring life and depth to your space. For a more eclectic look, utilize pops of color through your furniture and accessories like artwork, pillows, throws, and knickknacks.

Don’t feel like you have to stick to a strict palette either. When I was first decorating my home, I tried to adhere to a specific color scheme to make the room look cohesive, but in reality, the space felt flat. It wasn’t until I ditched the strict theme and started buying decor that simply made me feel happy that my home truly started to feel like my own. Try out the unexpected red theory with a pop of red, or simply choose decor in colors that you gravitate toward.

5. Create an entryway

The entryway is the first impression of your home, but it’s easy to forget in the decorating process. Creating a space that is welcoming while also being useful is a must. If you live in a rental with a small entry or no dedicated entryway at all, you can still create a space you are excited to come home to. To boost function, bring in storage options like a small shoe organizer or hooks on the wall for keys and bags, and hang a mirror on the wall to give the illusion of a bigger space (and allow for final outfit checks before you run out the door). If you have more room to work with, place a console table or bench against the wall to create a drop zone where you can dump your bag and other necessities when you walk in the door.

6. Add cozy vibes to your bedroom

In addition to being the place where you relax and unwind, your bedroom is the last place you see at night and the first thing you see when you wake up. So, why not make it the coziest room in the house? For me, I feel most at home when I’m sleeping in the cool AC under a plush comforter on a soft mattress. Upgrading your bedding adds a cozy factor that optimizes comfort, which is ideal for making your space feel like home. If you’re looking for a more relaxing atmosphere, bring in mood lighting options that you can customize to help you wind down in the evenings. You could even bring in a diffuser with spa-like scents or a humidifier to help you breathe easier at night. Whatever makes you feel most at ease and reduces your stress, incorporate it into your bedroom to create the perfect safe space.

7. Make your bathroom feel like a spa

When you think about what makes a house (or a rental) a home, the bathroom is probably not your first thought. However, I think updating your bathroom is one of the most underrated ways to make your rental feel like home. Make your space feel like a spa by hanging eucalyptus from your showerhead, setting a candle or diffuser on the counter, and adding organizational items like trays and baskets to maximize space. For a more substantial change, you could switch out your showerhead, add a decorative shower curtain and rugs, or mount suction-cup shelves in your shower. All of these updates can make your morning and evening routines feel like treating yourself to a spa day in a more cost-effective way.

8. Use rugs to customize your space

Don’t love the flooring in your new apartment? Rentals are notorious for having less-than-appealing flooring (gray vinyl, old carpet, tile that hasn’t been replaced in decades… you get the idea). Rugs are a great way to hide unseemly flooring and update the look of your rental without making any real changes to the space. Opt for a neutral rug to take the focus away from your floors, add drama by layering two rugs together (we love an oversized jute rug as a base layer), or opt for a high-pile option to make your space extra cozy. Washable rugs are always a good option for areas with high foot traffic, like an entryway or kitchen.

The post This Unexpected Brand Is My Secret Source for Luxurious Bedding at Super Affordable Prices appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>
Over the past couple of years, Quince has quickly become one of our favorite retailers over here at The Everygirl. Not only are we obsessed with their clothing (and that $50 cashmere sweater), but we’ve also become enamored with their top-notch accessories, home essentials, and travel items. However, if we had to pick one of our favorite sections on their site besides clothing, we’d have to give that spot to their bedding section.

I can’t be the only one who’s noticed how crazy expensive it can be to purchase new bedding. It almost seems like it has to cost a whole arm and a leg (and then some) in order to update your sleeping space or find affordable bedding in high-quality materials. This is where Quince steps in. Their bedding has a high-end look and feel, that’s not high in pricepoint. From high-quality linen that’s not several hundred dollars, to other affordable materials such as percale, bamboo, and more, Quince hits it out of the park with their bedding selection.

One of the main reasons we love Quince is because they give a breakdown of their pricing, where they get their materials from, and how they produce them in a way that’s good for the environment. When specifically talking about Quince’s bedding options, the choice to buy from Quince is easy to make. But after you’ve decided on upgrading your bedding with Quince, how do you know what type of bedding to buy? Quince offers seven different fabrics for their bedding, offering a wide range of options for any type of sleeper. We broke down all of Quince’s bedding fabrics and if it’s the right choice for you below.

If you want classic bedding that stays comfortable year-round

If you just want bedding that is not fussy and still comfortable, try bedding made out of organic cotton. Quince’s organic cotton has great reviews, and is definitely their most popular bedding. Trust me when I say anyone would be happy with this option. Organic cotton is simple, and perfect to keep on your bed year-round, no matter what type of climate you live in. It comes in multiple textures such as waffle knit, textured striped, brushed, ribbed, airy gauze, and more, so you can customize your bed’s look while still sticking to the good stuff.

If you’re looking for that lived-in look

Coastal grandmothers, rejoice! Quince’s European Linen is breezy and gives your bedding a laidback, lived-in vibe. It’s ideal to keep as your bedding year-round without being uncomfortable or too hot (so you can easily achieve that Nancy Meyers aesthetic every season.) The fabric is pre-washed, so it already comes extremely soft to the touch and is designed to only get softer after each wash. This material is sensitive, so it tends to hold onto wrinkles, but let the quality feel of this linen be your motivation to get top-tier bedding at an affordable price. Aside from standard duvet covers, pillowcases, and sheets, Quince also offers quilts and blankets in their perfected linen material.

If you want a luxe look at an affordable price

If you’re a cold sleeper or live in a cooler climate, sateen is your gal. Sateen is a fabric that is woven similarly to satin but isn’t as expensive. Quince’s Organic Sateen is breathable, traps heat, and is buttery soft to the touch. Sateen is known to have a sheen (similar to silk), so if you choose this bedding set, your bedding will shine subtly in the light yet still look chic and polished, especially if you opt for the set. That’s right, we’re getting fancy with our bedding now.

If you want that crisp hotel feel

Hot sleepers, you’re going to want to listen closely to this one. If you want your bed to look like a fluffy bed sent straight out of The Plaza Hotel, opt for some percale bedding. Percale is a closely woven fabric (tighter than sateen), weaved from cotton. While sateen sheets are silky and shiny, percale is cool and crisp. Percale sheets have a low thread count, which increases their lifespan. In fact, they only get softer and cooler after each wash and, they don’t fade (Um, yes, please!). They’re cool to the touch, so if you run hot at night, we’d recommend opting for this bedding tenfold.

If you want something luxe and cooling

If you’re a hot sleeper, don’t leave just yet because here’s another option for you. Bamboo bedding and clothing seem to be everywhere these days, but what really is it? Bamboo is an alternative to cotton that is more breathable and sustainable to produce. Quince’s Bamboo Viscose is lightweight, airy, and thin, so it doesn’t trap heat. While percale sheets are crisp and cooling, bamboo viscose is silky, soft, and cooling. They have a slight sheen and are temperature-regulating, so if you’re a sweaty sleeper, these are the way to go. These will definitely give you the luxe look while still keeping you cool.

If you want to stay warm and toasty

You know those cold winter days when you just want to hop into bed with a warm mug of cocoa? Flannel sheets are going to make that experience 10 times better. Flannel bedding is the warmest option you can choose for your bedding. If you’re a cold sleeper (like, super cold) or live in a very cold climate, flannel bedding is sure to keep you nice and toasty. Quince’s organic flannel is made from 100 percent cotton and achieves its flannel status from a loose weave. It’s brushed on each side, so you know it’s super soft to the touch (and won’t pill!). While flannel is for colder sleepers, reviews say it’s not too hot, so you can still get a cozy and comfortable sleep.

If you want to treat yourself with truly luxurious bedding

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can’t scroll through my timelines without seeing someone raving about silk pillowcases and hair ties right now. What if I told you that your whole bedding could be silky and shiny? Sleeping on silk has major benefits for your hair and skin. It controls frizz, keeps your hair and skin hydrated, and is hypoallergenic. Quince’s silk bedding is breathable and is made from 100 percent Mulberry silk, which is one of the highest quality silks. While Quince doesn’t offer silk bedding sets on their site, they do offer silk bedding separates such as pillowcases, quilts, and sheets that are temperature regulating, so you can be ensured a cooling and comfortable sleep no matter the time of year. Keep in mind that while it does look oh-so-luxe, it does require a lot of high-maintenance care such as hand-washing and hang-drying.

Just like jeans or underwear, the sunglasses you wear depend mostly on personal preference. The silhouette that frames your face best, the color you prefer, and how much you’re willing to spend are all factors when shopping for the accessory. And, of course, you can’t talk about shopping for sunglasses without mentioning Ray-Ban. The brand is a tried-and-true classic in the market, but the high price tag and limited range of styles can leave a little to be desired. That said, a handful of low-key, affordable, and celebrity-approved brands are just as worthy of your wallet.

Sunglasses play a massive role in accessorizing outfits, which means you can be as picky as you want when choosing a pair. Whether you’re shopping on a budget (we’ve included options under $50) or looking for a pair of sunglasses nobody you pass on the street will be wearing, these are seven of the best sunglass brands to shop that aren’t Ray-Ban.

The Editor-Vetted Brand: Le Specs

If you’re in the market for a versatile pair of sunglasses, let it be the Le Specs Outta Loves. I spent years on a hunt for my perfect shades, and the Outta Loves are not only universally flattering but actually affordable. Up until discovering the silhouette, I’d been at a loss to find sunglasses that complemented my face shape, but Le Specs delivers time and time again. Whether searching for a timeless pair of sunglasses or a trendy, statement-making pair, Le Specs’s best sellers are widely editor-vetted.

The Up-And-Coming Brand: Bru Eyewear

Emma Chamberlain has been wearing Bru Eyewear non-stop throughout this summer. Since the brand’s launch in 2022, it’s gained stamps of approval from Renee Rapp, Hailey Bieber, and more. Bru Eyewear pairs colorful lenses with neutral square and circular frames for a fun pop of color that’s still casually wearable but also totally exciting. Each pair is also named after historical buildings in California (where its founder grew up), which is a lovely touch.

The Under-$50 Brand: I-Sea

A chic pair of sunglasses doesn’t have to break the bank if I-Sea has anything to do with it. The Amazon Prime brand (so you can grab them in a pinch!) has a range of classic and trendy styles under $50. They also have a few dupes of popular styles, like the trending gold Celine glasses that went viral on TikTok. Whether you’re one to lose or break your sunglasses often, need a budget gift, or simply aren’t in the market to splurge on sunglasses, these are a great option.

“Underconsumption Core” is Everywhere: Here’s How I’ve Been Keeping a Minimalist Wardrobe for Years https://theeverygirl.com/minimalist-wardrobe/ https://theeverygirl.com/minimalist-wardrobe/#respond Mon, 29 Jul 2024 17:59:11 +0000 https://theeverygirl.com/?p=458618 minimalist wardrobe If you’ve been on TikTok recently, you may have stumbled upon the trending concept of “underconsumption.” Creators are showing off

The post “Underconsumption Core” is Everywhere: Here’s How I’ve Been Keeping a Minimalist Wardrobe for Years appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>
If you’ve been on TikTok recently, you may have stumbled upon the trending concept of “underconsumption.” Creators are showing off their spaces, from kitchen counters to medicine cabinets, and boasting about how little they own. It comes as a reprieve from the long stint of overconsumption we’ve been hit with post-pandemic, thanks to a rise in influencers making careers out of pushing products to the more than one billion users on TikTok alone.

While I’m excited to see underconsumption gaining popularity, it’s actually a mindset I’ve always lived by. For years, my Instagram bio has repped the slogan “minimalist wardrobe, maximalist style.” For me, what began as a career in sustainable fashion turned into a quest for nailing down the perfect wardrobe. (Or, almost perfect… more on that later.)

However, I wasn’t always this way; there was a time when I shopped exclusively fast fashion and would buy almost anything for the sheer sake of it being on sale. I would hoard whatever I could find: an old fabric scrap from sewing class, a stained shirt someone gave up on—you name it. I slowly learned that having “more” was actually hindering me. I was struggling to get dressed every day because my creativity was enfolded in a mass of decision fatigue from all of the—for lack of a better word—junk I had collected over the years. Around that same time, I learned the truth about the fashion industry and how much it negatively contributes to the environment. I had, put simply, had enough.

While the next logical step was building a capsule wardrobe, a wardrobe full of neutrals and basics didn’t really appeal to me. That’s really when I began to discover this idea that I didn’t need to completely lose my maximalist sense of style in order to make smarter decisions about my wardrobe. I could still keep a minimalist closet, full of the pieces that spoke to my individuality.

Today, I’m proud of the wardrobe I’ve created. It’s entirely me, and it didn’t come at a sacrifice. As someone who works in the fashion industry, it can be difficult not to want to sample new trends or keep up with other industry professionals every season, but I feel I have my wardrobe selection down to a T. Here are the five rules I live by to keep a minimalist wardrobe without sacrificing style.

1. Keep a Monthly Clothing Budget

Out of necessity, I created a clothing budget years ago. It started out as a very small number, but a number nonetheless. This number has slowly grown throughout the years (although it’s probably still significantly lower than expected). This is my #1 tip when it comes to building a wardrobe you really love.

If I won the lottery tomorrow, I’d still have a clothing budget. Much like a Pinterest board for outfit inspo, my budget gives me a clear vision of what I’d like to invest in each season. It pushes me to really think about what I’m purchasing rather than buying things I don’t need willy-nilly.

2. Invest in Pieces You Love

This may seem a bit cliché, but as simple as it is, it’s been one of the key pieces of advice I refer back to each time I get ready to make a purchase: If I don’t love something, I don’t buy it.

What I’ve found is that you don’t need to own a closet full of neutrals in order to find ultimate versatility; if you truly love something, you’ll wear it. What’s important is that each piece in your wardrobe supports your overall style vision, not that it’s a basic that can be paired with anything.

3. Create a Style Vision Board

Sourcing a minimalist closet can be a rather difficult feat. Whether you’ve tried a shopping fast, participated in a thrifting bender, or attempted to build a capsule wardrobe, you’ve probably felt some frustration along the way. And don’t get me wrong: I’ve been there, too.

Earlier this year, I helped my friend create a “style vision” for herself. A few weeks ago, while I was helping her pack for a trip after a frantic last-minute trip to the mall, we realized the trip to the mall wasn’t actually necessary at all; her style vision had driven her to buy pieces that she loved and worked for all occasions, vacation included. When you consistently shop for pieces that fit the way you want to dress—no last-minute shopping trips, final-sale items, or ill-fitting silhouettes included—you have pieces ready to go for day-to-day wear and special occasions alike. Create a vision board of the way you want to dress and stick to it. Chances are, you probably have a lot more hiding out in your closet than you think.

minimalist wardrobe
Source: @trendingwithtinsley

4. Wait It Out

With products now readily available at just the click of a button, it can be hard not to be swayed
to impulsively purchase. Word of advice: Wait it out. I’ve saved myself from hundreds of dollars of regrettable purchases throughout the years simply by delaying the swipe. And one more thing: When it comes to shopping in-person or at sales, avoid purchasing pieces right away. These are usually non-refundable and high-pressured situations that can result in purchasing things you’ll regret later. (Sample sales—I’m looking at you.)

While it can be easy to get carried away with the latest trends, I find that if I wait to purchase something, I end up losing my original sense of urgency. So ask yourself: Do I need it? Do I love it? Can I get by without it?

5. When in Doubt, Rent

The subject of clothing rentals has been unexpectedly controversial as brands like Nuuly and Rent the Runway have risen to popularity. Everyone in my life has already gotten my renting spiel at one point or another; I recently hit a financial milestone, and I have clothing rentals to thank. This isn’t dramatic: In the last two years, I’ve rented a value of more than $25,000 on Rent the Runway alone. I would say, “You do the math,” but I actually just did it.

With brands like Nuuly, you can pay as little as $98 a month in exchange for renting six items of clothing. (If you rent with Rent the Runway, you have access to bags and jewelry as well.) This has allowed me to stay on top of trends and stay within my monthly budget. Not only that—it’s inspired endless creativity when it comes to my styling. Some of my best looks have been completely rented, from head to toe. I’ve also scored some great pieces with tags still on for way cheaper than market value. Bonus: You save on dry-cleaning costs and storage headaches, too.

The Rom-Com Villain You Are, Based on Your Zodiac Sign https://theeverygirl.com/rom-com-villain-by-zodiac-sign/ https://theeverygirl.com/rom-com-villain-by-zodiac-sign/#respond Mon, 29 Jul 2024 17:29:22 +0000 https://theeverygirl.com/?p=459332 rom-com villain When it comes to nostalgic rom-coms, the real villain of the story is truly in the eye of the beholder.

The post The Rom-Com Villain You Are, Based on Your Zodiac Sign appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>
When it comes to nostalgic rom-coms, the real villain of the story is truly in the eye of the beholder. I have rewatched many of my favorite rom-coms only to realize that the person I thought was the villain was actually just a complex person. Often, the real villain of the story is in disguise (looking at you, Nate from The Devil Wears Prada). Regardless of whether they’re the obvious bad guy, one thing rom-com villains all have in common is that they’re not afraid to be themselves. Their strongest traits can help them succeed, but can also work against them—not unlike the traits of each zodiac sign.

Of course, a villain is typically making decisions that aren’t in the best interest of the main character. But then again, isn’t every villain the main character of their own story? If you want to know how your zodiac sign’s nuances align with a rom-com character’s, read on to see which villain you are, based on your sun sign.

Aries

rom-com villain
Source: Paramount

Regina George from Mean Girls

Regina George is the queen bee of high school, and perhaps of all the rom-com villains out there. Like a true Aries, Regina knows what she wants and goes after it. She’s not afraid of competition and will do anything to win, even if that means releasing the Burn Book to the entire school and causing total chaos. While Regina thrives in her own messiness, underneath her Aries boldness is also a person in search of acceptance, just like the rest of us. Like an Aries, her power may be her undoing, but it also might be her greatest strength when used for good.

Taurus

rom-com villain
Source: Walt Disney Pictures

Meredith Blake from The Parent Trap

Meredith is an ambitious business owner who runs her own PR company. It might not be obvious at first that Meredith is an Earth sign like Taurus, especially since she’s not great in a camping environment. However, she’s the definition of luxury and elegance when we first meet her, and those are definitely traits a Taurus tends to lean into. While she becomes the villain in the storyline of the movie, she’s actually quite practical and steady, never wavering and staying true to herself and her goals, just like any steady and staid Taurus.

Gemini

rom-com villain
Source: Walt Disney Pictures

Queen Narissa from Enchanted

Perhaps the most classic fairytale villain on this list, Narissa is most like a Gemini because she has many sides to her personality (and she can literally shape-shift into a dragon). She has clear goals and objectives: Narissa wants to keep her crown at all costs. Much like a Gemini, she can make impulsive decisions to achieve those objectives, which occasionally work in her favor but more often backfire. But through all of her choices, Narissa maintains the Gemini traits that serve her the best. Her cleverness and wit will always be there to guide her.

Cancer

rom-com villain
Source: Walt Disney Pictures

Nicholas Devereaux from The Princess Diaries 2

Okay, so technically Nicholas becomes Mia’s primary love interest, but he’s first introduced to us as the rom-com villain who challenges Mia’s throne in Genovia. While Nicolas initially comes off as arrogant, underneath that exterior is a person who eventually realizes he cares more about people than power. He supports Mia’s ascent to the throne, knowing she will be a great leader. Cancer signs act very similarly. Often, Cancers put up a protective shell to avoid getting hurt, but underneath that shell is a person who will do anything for someone they love.

Leo

rom-com villain
Source: Walt Disney Pictures

Lana from The Princess Diaries

When Lana isn’t trying to make Mia’s life miserable in The Princess Diaries, she’s actually super creative and loves to be in the spotlight. Like every Leo, she has great hair. Played by Mandy Moore when she was in her “singer era” at the time, Lana is not afraid to stand in front of a crowd and belt out her feelings, even when things aren’t quite going her way. Lana is vivacious and confident, both traits that make a Leo someone who stands out in a crowd, even if she could probably spend some of her energy helping other people shine, too.

Virgo

rom-com villain
Source: Universal Pictures

Helen from Bridesmaids

Like any true Virgo sign, Helen is organized, efficient, and genuinely wants to be the perfect friend. Helen gets things done, even when it challenges the people around her or renders her “unlikeable.” Her methods of showing she cares for her friends can sometimes come off as calculated and methodical, but that is often the true love language of a Virgo. Helen eventually learns to step back and include other people in wedding-related decisions, but never waivers from showing up and supporting her friends.

Libra

rom-com villain
Source: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Warner Huntington III from Legally Blonde

Yes, Warner broke Elle’s heart, and we can never really forgive him for the way he blindsided her. At the same time, he did lead her to a kick-ass career and the love of her life in Emmett, so clearly, he wasn’t totally evil. Like most Libras, Warner just wants things to be balanced, and he spends a lot of the movie just trying to make the best decision he possibly can: Going to law school, dating the girl he thinks is better for him, and pursuing academic prestige. As the most indecisive zodiac sign, most Libras can probably relate to some of Warner’s personal internal conflicts.

Scorpio

rom-com villain
Source: Columbia Pictures

Lucy (AKA Tom-Tom) from 13 Going on 30

Much like a Regina George of the 80s, when 13 Going on 30 begins, Lucy knows how to rule a friend group. Like a Scorpio, Lucy (also known as Tom-Tom) is one of the more elusive villain-like characters, because we never get to see her sensitive side. When Tom-Tom and Jenna grow up, like a true Scorpio, she is motivated to be successful, but she is also prone to jealousy. While Jenna is busy reckoning with adulthood, Lucy uses her Scorpio-like strengths to crawl her way to the top of their magazine’s hierarchy, relying on her own intuition and unwavering determination.

Sagittarius

rom-com villain
Source: Paramount Pictures

Abigail Fairfax from The Lost City

Played by the one and only Daniel Radcliffe, Abigail Fairfax is a multifaceted rom-com villain who loves to go on adventures, just like a Sagittarius might. While Abigail is reckless when he’s pursuing his goals, he’s also passionate about gaining wisdom. Like many adventure-driven rom-com villains and Sagittarius zodiac signs everywhere, he is truly on a quest for knowledge. The challenge for Sagittarius signs like Abigail is often trying to find the balance between their need for adventure in both the emotional and physical sense.

Capricorn

rom-com villain
Source: 20th Century Studios

Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada

Miranda Priestly is one of the most iconic rom-com villains, and arguably the hero of her own story. Her unforgiving standards make her ruthlessly judgemental. That being said, she knows she has to be ruthless in order to make sure her career stays on solid ground. Some might just simply call this ambition, which is a signature Capricorn trait. Much like Capricorn signs tend to be, Miranda is a perfectionist when it comes to her work, and relies on steady perseverance and razor-sharp focus to make sure that everyone around her is operating at their best.

Aquarius

rom-com villain
Source: Warner Bros.

Fiona from A Cinderella Story

There’s just something about Jennifer Coolidge as a villain that makes us love her, even when she’s playing an evil stepmother named Fiona. Like most Aquarians, Fiona is living her life on her own terms and isn’t stopping for anything or anyone. She has no use for trying to fit in. Fiona may be a little scattered when it comes to how she achieves her goals, but no one can say she’s not unique. Because of her flexible, go-with-the-flow Aquarian nature, Fiona is a villain who might be a good stepmother, if given the right motivation.

Pisces

rom-com villain
Source: Netflix

Gen from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

Just like a dreamy and sensitive Pisces, Gen knows how to hold a grudge. However, Gen’s actions in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before are largely driven by her emotional wants and needs, which most Pisceans can truly relate to. Her heart guides her, and while she doesn’t always do the right thing, she also intuitively understands her friends (and former friends like Lara Jean). Underneath her harsh exterior, like a Pisces, Gen is the type of rom-com villain who really just wants love and support.

The post Forget Pilates–This Free Challenge Will Make You Look Forward to Working Out appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>
Between the rise of run clubs and Hoka-wearing runners in the thick of training for marathon season, running is having a major moment—so much so that you could call it run-mania. Considering 50 million Americans (and counting) are participating in running or jogging, the workout has been one of the most popular forms of staying active (ICYMI, the hype is real). From the trends “GRWM to run” to “Join me for a run” to marathon training, it feels like everyone on social media is lacing up their sneakers and taking to the streets.

Running is also a measurable workout, with running fitness trackers increasing in popularity and a greater interest in races measured by distance. “[There’s been] a huge increase in people wanting to participate in races from 5Ks to half marathons,” said Holly Brooks, the founder of Strong Girl Society. But with the growing interest in races or trackers that turn movement into something measurable, it also adds to pressure that may not be beneficial. “These achievements are all incredible, but I can’t help but feel it puts a large amount of pressure on ticking off these distance milestones.”

As Brooks pointed out, long-distance running can feel daunting (especially if you’re new to it), and focusing on running a certain distance or tracking your statistics turns running into an outcome-focused activity rather than an enjoyable way to move your body. Luckily, runners all over are sharing a solution to challenge yourself without losing the enjoyment of going on a run. TikTok’s “Run Until” challenge is meant to feel more like a game than a workout, so you’re working on your physical fitness while still having fun (reminder: exercise is supposed to be enjoyable). Keep reading to learn about the “Run Until” challenge and expert tips to help you implement it into your fitness routine.

What is the “Run Until” Challenge?

Started by running creators Tom Trotter and Natalie Long, the “Run Until” challenge gamifies running by turning the workout into part “I Spy” and part scavenger hunt. Ahead of their run, runners determine the types of people, places, or things they need to spot before they can stop running. For example, the “game” can be as simple as running until you see another runner or as challenging (and specific) as running until you spot five different dog breeds. The goal is to challenge you to run longer (within your own limits) while your mind is focused on something else so you enjoy the run more than just running for a certain amount of time or distance.

Benefits of the “Run Until” Challenge

While running itself offers many benefits, such as improved cardiovascular health, better mindfulness, and boosted brain health, this specific challenge provides a few unique advantages you may not find in other running workouts.

It makes exercise feel fun, which helps with consistency

Simply going through the motions of an exercise routine you don’t enjoy because some influencer told you it would give you a six-pack isn’t an effective approach to fitness. If you want to make regular exercise a habit, research says you need to enjoy what you’re doing. The “Run Until” challenge encourages participants to take a more playful approach to running. Turning your workouts into a game makes exercise feel more joyful, helping you stay consistent. “The “Run Until” challenge moves away from the narrative that a run has to be a 10K to be successful,” Brooks said. “I think it truly reminds us all that running can just be fun and even slightly silly!”

It increases creativity

When we were kids, creativity was built into our day. From art classes to creative hobbies, we had plenty of opportunities to let our creative juices flow. But for many of us, as we became adults and started juggling work, social lives, and finances, the chances to foster creativity were few and far between. Incorporating the “Run Until” Challenge into your workout routine means tapping into your creative side while simultaneously getting in a workout and improving your overall well-being. Because the world is your oyster when it comes to choosing and searching for your run-until-you-see person, place, or thing, the challenge pushes you to be more imaginative in adding variety to your runs.

It improves mood

Whether you’re driving, walking, or running, many of us opt for the same routes every day. However, switching up your routine like your usual route can boost your mental health. When you take a novel route, your brain releases dopamine, helping enhance your mood and increase your motivation. Depending on the specific items you search for, you might find yourself running through a cute new neighborhood or exploring a city park. This element of discovery adds diversity to your routes, helping keep your runs fresh and engaging. “Running is the perfect way to get to know or appreciate your surroundings,” Laura Henshaw, an expert runner and coach, told Body+Soul. “Whether you’re in the city streets, on the coast, at a park, or in the countryside, embrace the beauty of what’s around you.”

Tips for Getting Started

Ease your way into it

If you want to create a running habit without getting injured or overly depleted, it’s important not to push yourself too hard when getting started. Brooks recommended figuring out something you are more likely to see to keep it realistic and attainable. “A good example would be ‘run until you see someone walking a dog,'” she said. “This will ensure you aren’t heading out and running an ultra-marathon because you set your sights on something too niche. As you build up your running ability, you can step it up and make it more challenging.” Incorporating walking intervals into your run can help make your run feel more enjoyable, building your endurance and preventing you from getting hurt or exhausted.

Challenge your workout mindset

If you’re used to super-structured workout classes, taking an unstructured jog may feel weird. However, the purpose of this challenge is to help you embrace playfulness in your movement. When you go out for a run, the main objective should be having fun. Challenge the voice in your head telling you working out should always entail going at it hard or serving some specific purpose outside of making you feel good. Because the “Run Until” Challenge involves setting out with an intention, it can be a much-needed break from your usual structured routine, providing motivation and injecting a sense of adventure into your workouts.

Find the proper running shoes

Your feet are the foundation of your body. Their function is to efficiently support body weight and provide for motion; having the correct running shoes is essential for preventing injury and allowing you to move optimally. “Running shoes are your key piece of equipment as a runner,” conveyed James Rodgers, an endurance sports expert and UESCA-certified running coach. “If possible, try some different brands in a running store; comfort is key. Also, keep in mind the terrain you are likely to run on. For example, if you’re going off-road, a trail running shoe with plenty of grip is a good option.” Pick shoes that are specifically designed for running, know what to look for in a running shoe (i.e., cushion, arch support, wider toe), and consider your running surface. Take rest days

When you love your fitness routine, it can be easy to overexert your body. However, rest and recovery are just as important as exercise, especially for runners. Thirty percent of female non-elite endurance athletes are affected by overtraining syndrome, which causes extreme fatigue, mood swings, and increased risk of injury. To avoid overtraining syndrome, take at least one rest day a week, and always listen to your body. If you’re feeling resistant, overly sore, or fatigued one day, skip the run for a gentle walk or stay home and stretch.
